Chapter Twenty

“Who is this knight de Grispere?” Sheriff Ellwood asked of Sir Aubyn.

“I know not, for I have rarely been at court these last two years and many have now entered the list of knighthood. I have a vague reckoning of the name when I served with the Earl of Courtney for the muster to capture the pirate William Longe. Yet we set for sea and failed in that accord, though more by dint of purpose than of being repelled. Think thee that this is the knight that set to in Plymouth? For he was accompanied by a paynim, not a Cornishman as reports would have it.”

“It is possible. Who knows what devilment may have been abroad on such foul deeds?” The sheriff rubbed his chin in thought. “Yet this is cause for concern, for if the papers be for the king’s ear as we believe, then who better to spy for him than a household knight? I do heartily wish that we knew more of what we faced both in the battle to come and the forces set against us.”

“Take heart. For I shall kill this knave and with his life take any and all papers pertaining to the witness statement from Plymouth. That will end our plight and that of my Lord of Courtney. To wit I needs must prepare for my combat on the morrow.”
